while waiting to hear from printer manufacturer, talked to an aquaintenance who works with computers. appearently with xp
if the system is told to print back to front and the software is told to print back to front it may cause some "miscommunication" and print normally (front to back) he suggested either let the software make the decision or the operating system not both. followed up on his suggestion when we got home from teaching a class and it did work.

              Have you downloaded and installed the latest WinXP-specific print
          drivers from the manufacturer's web site? Have you asked the printer
          manufacturer if that model printer can even support "reverse printing"
