If you recently updated your computer from one operating
system to another (for example, Windows 98 to Windows
XP), please uninstall VirusScan, restart your computer,
and then reinstall VirusScan to get the correct version
for your operating system.

I just fixed this on a computer running Windows XP Home,
AOL Instant Messenger 5.5, and McAfee VirusScan 8.

The problem was that AOL Instant Messenger was running in
Windows 98 compatibility mode. It would call VirusScan
for XP to scan file transfers. VirusScan for XP would
then think it was being called in Windows 98 and display
a "wrong operating system" message.

I browsed to C:\Program Files\AIM95\aim.exe, right
clicked it and selected "Properties", chose
the "Compatibility" tab, and unchecked "Run this program
in compatibility mode for:" and pressed OK.
The message no longer appears.

If you do this, I'd recommend getting the latest version
of AOL Instant Messenger.
