Is TCP/IP for the LAN connectoid defined for a static IP address? Or for a
dynamically assigned IP address (i.e., DHCP)? The fact that "ipconfig
/release *" or "ipconfig /renew" report that the LAN connectoid isn't
configured for DHCP makes me wonder what non-standard setup you have to
TCP/IP.
When you lose the Internet connection, can you still "ping 127.0.0.1"? When
you have a connection, try running "ping -n 100 www.yahoo.com" (or your ISP
or whatever target domain suits your fancy) to get a decent average of how
many packets are getting lost. It's hard to know at what level would be
considered back but I usually call if I see more than 10% are getting
dropped. That's because the connection will slow down waiting for the
packets to get resent. Eventually with enough dropped packets it not only
gets slow but almost appears dead.
Do you have a router between your computer's NIC and the cable modem you
didn't mention yet?
When you say "cable" modem, I presumed that you are *not* using DSL. It is
a cable modem and not a DSL modem, correct?
Is it a wired connection from your NIC to the cable modem? Or do you have
wireless hubs or routers?
