HP DeskJet 812C Printer w/ XP

I recently upgraded to XP from 2000. I only used the computer for a couple of
weeks and I got major problems. The HP 812C installed but I remember getting
a message warning about compatibility. The printer seemed to work ok but
something seems to have corrupted the system.
The computer kept booting on its own and soon I could not boot past the blue
error screen. I tried Rolling Back and using the Last Good Configuration, but
neither helped. The computer kept getting worse. I DO NOT think it is a
virus.
After the upgrade to XP. a couple of times I got wavy lines coming out of
sleep mode and I needed to reboot. The last unfixable problem was a corrupt
AVG (virus protection) that can not be fixed.
I plan on having the system reloaded with XP again but I don't want to be
back with the same problems again.
Besides the printer I have not installed much. I have a USB hub, I installed
ACDSee and have used camera all of which are XP compatible.
Any suggestions or comments will be greatly appreciated.
