Slipstreaming is where you integrate the latest service pack with an older
installation CD to create a new CD which will automatically install
whichever service pack was slipstreamed. It doesn't take long to do.

Instructions are here..

Pity that you can't stretch to a new case and power supply. It is always
useful to have something working which can be connected to the Internet in
the event that you need to look for more answers..

Starting with new, (reasonably good quality), case and power supply, is
REALLY, REALLY good advice.
The PC components market is always flooded with countless thousands of cheap
cases, cheap psu's, and dirt cheap case+psu combinations, (some cases with
lots of silly gimmicks on them), and many are often NOT a good choice.
Having said that, lots of really cheap case+psu combinations, give good
service for many years but, using one of them can put all (expensive) PC
components at serious risk of damage. A problem of course, is that a good
quality case and PSU, is usually prohibitively expensive !

My main PC is currently an Antec Solo case
http://www.ebuyer.com/product/112659 , and a new one, currently costs an
ENORMOUS £76.48. I think the "used" "Antec SOLO" case, that I bought from
ebay, cost me around £60, ( darn Antec, almost always achieves a premium
price on ebay auctions ! ), and I put a Seasonic SII 430watt PSU in it,
that cost me £57.50 new, a couple of years ago. That's a WHOPPING £136.48,
for just case and PSU but, some Antec cases are a joy to build a system
into, and Seasonic SII's are built using all solid aluminium capacitors, and
have a full range of electrical protections designed and built in, so that
when there's a fault, it won't destroy your valuable System box innards !
Quality PSU's also often afford much more stability than some real cheapies!
It's HIGHLY desirable, (and worth a small fortune in time alone), to know
that all hardware is of good quality, and will perform reliably and remain
completely STABLE, and as I've already said, if, or when, the PSU fails - it
hopefully won't destroy other costly system box internal components at the
same time.

Another significant consideration is that 80+ certified PSU's, (such as the
more expensive Antec PSU's, Seasonic, Corsair, brands, ...Fortron - ...is
Fortron still going ? etc.), will significantly reduce mains electricity
consumption - esp. over the long term :-)

There's a lot to be said for buying a PC from one the larger manufacturers
such as DELL, HP/Compaq etc. It is difficult, if not impossible, for the
"lone PC builder" to match component specs' and prices, in a given e.g.
DELL, or HP, model, with individually sourced components - even when sourced
form highly competitive PC component vendors. ...and that's not even
considering the "volume licensed" Windows platform, software suite,
peripheral goodies such as LCD monitor, KB, Mouse, Spkrs. etc. all often
bundled with major brand PC's. ...and then there's all the work pre-done
for you, such as ironing out problems with drivers and application software
etc, all usually neatly imaged onto a hidden hd partition, - so that the
machine can be quickly restored to the software condition it was in when
first purchased, (avoiding lots of costly tech. support), ! ...that's also
worth another small fortune !
