Hello. I have "Windows XP Home", version: 2002, Service Pack 3, on my HP/Compaq Presario OEM - SR1810NX home computer. What I should have gotten (back in the day, which I didn't 'stupid me'), was/is XP Pro, thus, now I'm at the point that I what . . . have to buy Vista Business and then downgrade to XP Pro? I want it, I need it, and it will cost me to have it, I 'get' that.

But, seperately, I'm also doing/amidst research for a eventual new computer (itself) upgrade (quad code or misc) between AMD or Intel, and have much saving to do, thus, solely want, at that 'post' time, only IE 6, I don't like IE 7, windows media player 10, not 11, probably see if I can transfer current/present computer's hard drive data over to new larger computer hard drive, empty (so to speak BUT somehow ideally avoid transfering over XP home and with bought XP Pro, transfering over my data and after emptying current/present computer, setting's, data, everything, so to speak, scraping the whole desktop (empty, completely) to either trash or maybe try to sell for $20 or alittle more, whatever. Plus . . . With: Board, DP965LT and Processor, (?) X6700, I'm trying to price them alone, with or without anything else built in, for no more than $500. I'll get (etc) after & deal with it. I'm in Los Angeles, CA 90057, but I suppose I could (buy) from anyone (professionally) mail order, in all of Los Angeles County and/or in the USA, but again, (for me), just a motherboard and processor, the more closer to quad 'SPEED", the better, and with OR without integrated graphics and sound card and etc/misc, for under $500. I know, I know, I'm (*&^%$@), but I'm low income and gotta accomplish getting what I seek, solely starting with the board and processor; everything else (tower case, etc) is secondary to me researching a board and processor. I get that 'right', then and only then, can and will I move forward toward everything else (tower case, etc), which I guess is about 7 - 10, give or take seperate and individual componet part's that all, when come together, make up, say, a new computer, aside and seperate from me unfortunately having to ill - buy MS Vista Business, IN ORDER, to then downgrade to XP Pro - which I want, and IE 6 and windows media player 10; don't like IE 7, nor windows media player 11. Then I EITHER have to have my current/present hard drive (s) C (used: 23.5 GB, free: 62.7 GB, capacity: 86.3 GB and D recovery, misc drive (used: 6.50 GB, free: 332 MB, capacity: 6.82 GB) - total: used: 30.0 GB, free: 394.7? < don't think that's right. What I have (right now, currently/presently): Single processor, Microsoft XP Home, ver 2002, Service Pack 3, OEM - HP/Compaq, AMD Sempron (tm) processor 3200+, 1.79 GHz, 1.18 GB ram, virual memory/paging file size (which comes up from time to time, but not often: for C and D drive's - 1507 MB. C drive space available: 65789 MB, recommended: 1821 MB, currently allocated: 1507 MB, and D drive: space available: 332 MB, recommended: 1821 MB, currently allocated: 1507 MB. So, yeah, that's it, sort of, in a nutshell. I want to do what I normally do on this one, but what Board, DP965LT - $123.00 and Processor, (?) X6700 - $183.00 or, either one, (sorry), but AMD's processor - Phenom X4 9950 - $199.00, with board - Asus M3A79-T Deluxe - $132.75, so . . . where am I now on this . . .

Last year, I purchased something like this. The Microsoft EULA
states that it is tied to one computer, whatever computer you
install it on. Typically, the seller of the product, will insist
you buy at least one "piece of hardware" with this purchase. When
I bought my copy, I bought a motherboard, RAM, and processor at the
same time. Remember, this is not a "Retail" copy, it is "OEM", so
Microsoft Support won't help you. The "Retail" version would legally
allow it to be moved from one computer to another.

With regard to your hardware purchase, the DP965LT and X6700 sounds like
old stock. The DP965LT does not have built in video, so you'd need to
equip it with a video card.

This is your current computer. Video is supported via the ATI Radeon Xpress 200
chipset (ATI RS482/SB400). There is one PCI Express x16 slot on the
motherboard, for the addition of a video card. If you had added a video card
to the SR1810NX, you could move it to the new computer, as the new
computer will have PCI Express x16 too.

This is a picture of your current motherboard. Processor is socket 939 (out of production).

http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/document?docname=c00378480&cc=us&dlc=en&lc=en&jumpid=reg_R1002_USEN#

One possible upgrade, would be to change the processor to a S939 4800+
dual core. I see three for sale on Ebay, in the $100+ region. That gives
you a dual core, for a moderate improvement in smoothness. I don't know
if that is the right answer for you or not, because I don't know
enough about the SR1810NX. You might want to Google, to see
whether people do those kinds of upgrades, and see how it goes.
The product you'd be looking for, is ADA4800DAA6CD (processor
without bundled heatsink and cooling fan).

If you go with the DP965LT motherboard, that won't have video built
into the motherboard, so you'd need to throw in a $30 video card
to the PCI Express x16 slot.

http://www.intel.com/support/motherboards/desktop/dp965lt/

The front side bus (FSB) is limited to FSB1066 on that motherboard.
That limits your upgrade possibilities. There are nice processors
now with FSB1333 for example. So the DP965LT is old stock. If
it was being sold at a bargain price, it might make sense, but
the thing is, you'll be throwing a chunk of cash into an Intel
processor, and the motherboard should be picked after you
select a processor. It will likely mean selecting a
more recent motherboard that supports FSB1333.

This is currently the cheapest Intel quad, the Q8200 2.33GHz at $170. It
is FSB1333. The Q9550 2.83Ghz at $280 is nicer in some ways, but that
is $110 more.

Here is a full sized Intel motherboard P43/P45 chipset for $99. No video
on this one. You need a full sized computer case to hold the 12" x 9.6"
motherboard. (MicroATX boards are 9.6" x 9.6", but the selection
on those might not be as nice.)

Here is a throwaway video card for $30 to go with it.

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814121259

2GB total RAM for $24. Low profile. A bit hard to insert in the
motherboard. Make sure the motherboard is well supported, when
you insert the RAM. (I bought something similar recently, and
it hurts your fingers to insert this stuff. The full height RAM
seems to slide in a bit easier. But the price is right.)

Power supply for $45. One PCI Express power connector, for a moderate
power video card upgrade some day.

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817194037

My total Intel build (basic components) 170+99+30+24+45=368

That isn't everything you'd need, but that will give a basic
idea for an Intel build. I didn't select the cheapest of
everything I could find. You can "shave nickels" off it if
you want.

*******
For the AMD build, I'll pick something from their upper end,
with rough price parity.

AMD Phenom II X4 920 2.8GHz Socket AM2+ 125W Quad-Core $184

For a motherboard here, it is easier to get integrated graphics.
This one is a microATX motherboard, so only 9.6" x 9.6", and
has fewer slots for add-in cards. Has room for a video upgrade
later. Typically, a user might add a gamer video card and a
PCI sound card or the like. But you can start with nothing
plugged into the slots.

Manual - board has a PS/2 keyboard port, but uses a USB mouse.
http://dlcdnet.asus.com/pub/ASUS/mb/socketAM2/M3A78-CM/E4420_M3A78-CM-V4-manual.zip

If I use the same RAM, power supply 184+75+0+24+45=328
(The zero, is for no video card needed.)

*******

So that should give you a start. $368 for hardware plus $140 for
OS, is about $500. Slightly under that, with the AMD build.
