DVD RW drive not working after computer virus

I had the virtuemonde virus on my sony vaio pcv rs520. I finally got rid of
it. It severly messed with my pc. It deactivated my xp, would not let me do
an online antivirus scan in safe mode, windows xp would not load, it took 9
hours to scan 120 gb hd. I finally got rid of it. now, I have some issues.
HL-DT-ST GWA 4040b dvd-rw drive not working. will not play cds or dvds.
every software I have is giving me an error or is completely freezing my
computer. dvd shrink gives me an "I/O error" Windows media player says the
"disc is diry or damaged, turn on error correction" However, I put the disc
in the second dvd rom drive and it plays perfectly in windows media player.
I checked device manager, device manager had it incorrectly listed as
"cd-rom" and not "dvd-rw" The virus must have did that. I uninstalled
"cd-rom", rebooted, now device manager correctly lists as 'dvd-rw" drive.
says it is enabled and working properly. I have tested this dvd rw drive and
put a windows xp oem disc in to boot from. Windows xp loads all the way
until you install. So the dvd-rw drive must work? This must be a windows xp
issue? the dvd-rw drive worked a week before I got the virus. the dvd-rw
drive is seen in "my computer" I also loaded the default bios with no luck.


other things this virus messed up..My ethernet card. I had to reset the
winsock in command prompt to get back online. I can't right click the
desktop without freezing the entire pc (I read the context menu in the
registry is corrupt)

any help will be greatly appreciated
