Re: device not responding -- which one?

The connector didn't necessarily seem loose, but I gave it a hard push in
anyways to check (actually did the other end of the ribbon too, just in case)
& rebooted -- the error didn't appear again with the re-boot.
I find it odd, as the CD-drive never stopped working -- I think I've even
burned with it since the error started occuring.
More annoyed with myself if it is fixed, because I've been worrying about it
for a couple of days. (I won't totally believe it until I don't see the
error tomorrow).
I'm just loath to pull out & open my tower.
Thank you.

Power down the PC,.
Next check the ribbon cable to your CD-RW to see if it's not loose.
If it seams to be fully inserted then disconnect the ribbon cable
from the CD-RW and reboot the PC,
if the error message no longer occurs then it's the CD-RW drive.

I've been getting the following recurring error on my computer:
The device, \Device\Ide\IdePort1, did not respond within the timeout
period.
How do I know which "device" this refers to? When I look at the Device
Manager both my hard drives & cd-drives are listed with IDE under the
description.
I know it refers to either my 2nd hard drive or my CD-RW drive. Googling
did not help me clarify, as I found the exact same error associated with
both
hard drives & cd drives.
I saw a suggestion to update my ATA controller & this didn't help. I also
saw a suggestion to check internal connections, but would prefer to know
which device's connections I need to check before I open up my computer.
I'm
hoping my new hard drive isn't dying.
