Hi,
I have a Gateway 500X retail desktop that has a non-operational
motherboard. Do I have to get the exact same motherboard(model
number) to
replace it or can I get another Gateway/emachine motherboard with a
different model number, and be able to re-install/activate Xp?
In order to use the version of XP that came with your computer, you
would
need to replace the motherboard with the exact model it came with. If
Gateway no longer makes the motherboard and/or won't support that
machine,
you'll need to purchase a retail copy of XP. Possibly you can still
find
one at NewEgg or Amazon. The alternative would be to use a generic OEM
install disk and use the Product Key on your COA sticker. You will
probably
have to call in for activation. Obviously if you don't have a generic
OEM
install disk you would need to buy one and at that point you'd be
better
off buying a retail version.

Thanks so much!!!
Congratulations. You just fragmented your own thread. Next time
reply to the original thread, don't start a new one.
Dumbass. Look at the thread again. I wasn't responding to you but
the the person that answered you but started a new thread instead of
posting the reply to the original thread.
Now you've been given two notches in the dumbass stick.
I'm sure he's quaking with fear - NOT!
