In win98 one could in "system-settings" change the keyboard IIRC.
Don't know if something similar exists in XP as I don't use it.
Does the external keyboard have more "function-keys" then the
internal one? Then most likely you will have to select the proper
keyboard each time you use the internal one.
Other then that I could list a few "guesses" bat they wont to be
helping you...
