Being defective wont show in the bios or anywhere within windows
Only a bootable disk checking utility will properly test your drive.
Being noisy is an indication of a faulty drive

All is well in the BIOS and Windows sees the drive as RAW...the drive is
abnormally noisy on start-up and shut-down and there is a chance that it
may
be defective or damaged but would that not show up in the BIOS...Frank

XP is up to date with SP 2...tried partitioning the drive into 4 parts
(roughly 120gb each)...still no success...if all else fails would my
chances
be better if I used this drive externally through USB or
Firewire...thanx.
Frank:
The response you rec'd from DL is the correct (& only) course of action
to
take at this point. As DL indicated, download and use the HDD diagnostic
utility that you can obtain from the website of the disk's manufacturer.
You
*must* determine whether you're dealing with a defective drive at this
time.
For the moment do not consider installing the drive in some external
enclosure.
I assume the disk is under warranty so there should be no problem in
getting
a replacement from the manuf. should the disk prove defective.
