Watch for heavy drive activity, if you are using programs and hitting the Pagefile a lot, then boosting RAM will help. On the other hand if the drive is being accessed in PIO mode (due to errors) instead of DMA, then the PC will be slow also. Open Device Manager and check the Primary IDE channel Properties , Advanced tab and see what access is being used. If PIO, you may uninstall and reinstall and cause it to go back to DMA.
