right click on the speaker icon in the systray, open volume controls then take a look at the microphone settings...

The microphone is normally "muted" so that it will not generate a feedback loop from the mic to speakers to mic etc but, with the headset plugged in unmute it, then scratch the mike as you adjust the volume to see if you can hear the scratches in the headset.

Some audio setups have an advanced option on the column which may offer boost settings.
