Hi...I write as a virtual novice PC user....

Having recently suffered a hard drive failure with the loss of much
stuff not backed up, I invested in a Maxtor One Touch 111 500Gb USB
external drive.

I completed the installation and was familiarising myself with its
settings and functions (at about 3am - brain not in gear -
concentration deficit - shouldn't have 'fiddled')....managed to evoke
the unpleasant 'blue screen' ...uninstalled the software (thoroughly)
and formatted the drive. After reinstalling software and reconnecting
the drive I am experiencing a couple of problems....the main one being
that when I open the 'Sync' function and open 'Edit my sync settings'
the only folder displayed and available to select is my ATI graphics
folder - no others are listed. In the 'Backup' area all folders are
displayed and the backup process works fine....although the systray
icon is red and says that backup has failed....also clicking 'Backup
status' brings up a window saying : - "Windows cannot access the
specified drive, path, or file. You may not have the appropriate
permissions to access the item"...then clicking OK I get a window
saying "Backup Status cannnot be opened, because a system error
occurred". Writing to Maxtor support, on several occasions, has been
unsuccessful....clicking 'go' after filling in the form and composing
the message - I am told that my attempt was unsuccessful due to a
system problem.

I would very much appreciate any advice.....

After many problems with both backups and synch using the supplied
Retrospect software, including frequent system failures, and numerous
e-mails back and forth with Maxtor to no avail, I finally reformatted
the Maxtor III, and bought a copy of Acronis True Image 10. Have not
had one spec of trouble since going to Acronis.
