PCI and PCIe slots are different and not interchangeable.
So you're correct.
Check the specs for your mobo [ on-line or in the manual]
that applies to your exact mobo.
Graphics cards would normally go in an AGP slot on mobo
built prior to the introduction of the PCIe cards. The PCIe
16x slot is used for graphics to give the highest speed.
There are standard PCI graphics cards for those who want to
install a second graphics card or whose mobo lacks an AGP
slot.
