hi...
i was wondering .... I have an ASUS board with 2 on-board SATA
connectors. And recently, I bought this WD 500GB hard drive with an
eSATA port. So, would it work or would it be fine....... if I
connected my external hard drive to the on-board SATA pins... using an
eSATA to SATA cable?????
my understanding is that the drive would be treated as an internal one
and may not be hotpluggable... I cant think of any other problems with
this idea... can you?
any advice will be greatly appreciated!
thanks,
Nfinity
When you say you "bought this WD 500GB hard drive with an eSATA port.." I
assume you're referring to that HDD in a USB/SATA external enclosure. Is
that right?
Assuming it is - if that external enclosure has the eSATA port you describe,
this would be an indication that you have direct SATA-to-SATA connectivity.
As such you can proceed as you indicate, i.e., use a SATA signal cable with
one end having the eSATA connector (to connect to your external enclosure)
and the other end with a "normal" SATA connector for connection to your
motherboard's SATA connector.
In so doing your SATA HDD would be treated as an internal HDD (and is thus
bootable should it contain the XP OS). It may or may not be "hot-pluggable".
In most cases it would be, however, the motherboard would have to have this
capability. Since you mention that your motherboard has only two SATA
connectors this is an indication (although not definitive) that your
motherboard supports the 1.5 Gb/s SATA data interface and not the 3.0 Gb/s
SATA data interface, therefore "hot plugging" or "hot-swapping" capability
may not be present. Simply try it and see. Your motherboard's manual or user
guide may also have this information.
