Although XP is pretty good about recognizing hardware, including CD/DVD
readers/writers, it is not perfect.
DVDRAM is relatively unusual, compared to DVD+-R+-RW.
I would guess that XP needs a driver for this hardware. You would need to
get that from LG. In fact, you might check with LG to be sure they think
that this device is XP-compatible. Also, ask whether they know of any
adverse hardware or software interactions with it (e.g., antivirus, other
optical devices, CD/DVD software, service pack level of XP, etc).
It is hard to imagine that updating the motherboard BIOS (Intel chipset)
would help, but having the latest version probably won't hurt either.
You might also check with LG to see whether they have a firmware update for
the DVD-RAM drive. That is somehting like a BIOS update, but specific to
the LG device, not the motherboard. If they have one, be sure to get
instructions on how to install it; it may require a DOS/win98 floppy or
similar.

I have installed a DVDRAM Drive on a Dell XPS400.
Dell has told me that they prefer all DVD's to be installed as Cable
select.
So I tried this first. When this message was in the Device
Details under Capabilities "CM_DEVCAP_UNIQEID" the first thing I did was
to
called LG. They were no help and did not understand what this means.
After
my research I believe that this means that the DVD or CDROM inf file that
installs as PNP Does not see the Equipment ID. I have reinstalled Windows
Media Center 2005 and now I am considering an update from the chipset that
is
on the Dell site which is version 7.0.0 to the Intel version of 7.3.1.10.
My
chipset is 945G/GZ/P/PL. So now the system is set up with SATA Maxtor in
Primary - LG DVD Ram in Drive 0 and NEC DVD R/RW the Drive 1. LG in
Master
and Nec in Slave. However I before I go any further with the driver
installs
of course I need to decide if it would matter regarding the updated
version
of the chipset.
I did get the Fimware update and second this is a GSA-H10L HLDT ST
DVDRAM.
There is something else that is a puzzle. I have a program called
Everest which gives me all the details of my system. In the report I can
see that the NEC shows up under the Optical Drive Properties as NEC DVD
+RW/DVD -R/W and the Interface as ATAPI and it also shows all the read and
writing speeds.
However the LG only shows Device Properties and Device Manufacturer.
Before
I did the Reinstall I had Nero 7.7 installed and the Info Tool shows both
drives with both serial numbers and all read and write speeds. So why
isn't
Windows seeing the same information?
I need help as you can see.
Sorry this is so long I have worked on this for over two weeks. Short of
throwing out the new LG I need to learn more about any options. One
option I
would like to try to install is called Driver Installer Frameworks Tools
(DPIFx ver. 2.1 and DIFXapp) or possibly get some help with DevCon.exe the
command line utility I know this has been around for a while but I have
never
used it I could use a few starter suggestions, if you think this would
help.
I currently have .net framework 1.1 and the updates that comes of the
install of the DVD reinstall. However I have not installed the chipset as
yet
because I waiting for one of you to let me know if updating that would
make a
difference. I do have two DVD's one for .Net Framework 1.1 and the SDK,
and
.Net Framework 2.0 SDK which has installer 3.1 Direct x9.0c. I also have
Microsoft Driver Development Kit for Windows.
Now I know you are wondering why I am able to have this one. It is
because
I do have my on Software and Hardware business. Most of my work is repair
for software. Most of my customer base are elderly and consumers that
have
little or no knowledge of computers. I found with my own systems years
ago
that I and others were being ripped off my repair sites that take the easy
way out and reinstall the system; Most of the time with out backing up.
So
I felt very sorry for the elderly because most of there vital medical
information was stored. So I took as many classes as I could afford over
the
years and have found that 8 times out of 10 it is a software problem.
Which
I usually don't have a problem fixing.
I also build systems or find the customers systems that meet there needs.
I have also written a simple manual which I supply for free to help they
keep their system clean and organized as will as safe.
As much as I tried to learn it never seems to be enough. I envy your
knowledge and appreciate your patience with the never ending task of
answering as many of our messages as your can.
