Thanks a million!
Until this morning I was too scared to mess with the jungle of cables in
that box but the problem was as simple as that: They had connected the
cd-rom
to IDE2 while in the motherboard manual it's clearly stated it should be
connected to IDE1. So I changed that and everything works fine! Now I know
exactly how everything is connected in there.
Thanks again!

Hi there Elsa,
I must say you're a persistent gal.. ;D
Sure do love Greek cuisine and pastries, yummy..!

This is your mobo, right..? If so get your updates here, when you need
to..
http://www.gigabyte.com.tw/Products/Motherboard/Products_Spec.aspx?ClassValue=Motherboard&ProductID=1856&ProductName=GA-8I915G%20Duo
Scroll down to Internal I/O Connectors see this 2 x UltraDMA 133 IDE (For
HDDs only)
http://www.gigabyte.com.tw/Support/Motherboard/Manual_DownloadFile.aspx?FileType=Manual&FileID=16456
See the manual (above link) for the Raid and IDE controller, HDD
installation, BIOS settings, etc., for more info or just download the PDF
file..
http://www.foxitsoftware.com/pdf/rd_intro.php
If you don't have Adobe or just want a simple & fast PDF reader might try
foxit PDF reader, if you desire to..
Looks like you may need to read the setup instructions for the HDD and CD
drives and make sure that if you are not using the Raid controller that
you
follow the instructions on how to setup the drives without it enabled.. I
noticed that it mentions the Raid connector on the mobo is next to the
IDE
connector too, it may be that the cable was knocked lose during the
graphics
card installation and reconnected to the raid controller in error..?
Hope this can help you elsa..
Post your results..
Cheers

Hi elsa,

Might look over the above link, may be a support forum here that can
address
the issue, your having..
Not sure if it is a good idea to have the CD drive on a raid
controller,
my
guess would be to connect it too the secondary IDE controller as a (M)
master or (S) slave, with the jumpers set accordingly..
However, if the IDE data cable has a device that is set to (CS) cable
select
the CD-ROM drive should be set to (CS) as well..
Without knowing your systems specs and or who setup the raid
controller
in
the 6 month gap since the CD drive worked, might indicate perhaps a
connection was made to the raid (if actually a new card or onboard..?)
card
in error, with the CD drive and a HDD on the same cable, that was
originally
connected to one or the other IDE channels..?
So, you might just need to remove the CD drive from the data cable and
reconnect it to a free connector on an IDE cable coming off the mobo,
if
one
exists.. There also could be an indication in the BIOS or separate
BIOS
for
the raid controller too, though I am not sure if a CD-ROM is raid
worthy
to
begin with, this may be the problem..

My motherboard is a Gigabyte GA-8i915G Duo and at boot I see the
following:
Detecting IDE drives...
IDE Channel 0 Master: WDC WD1200JD-00HBB0
IDE Channel 0 Slave: None
IDE Channel 1 Master: WDC WD1200JB-00GVC0
IDE Channel 1 Slave: None
Scan Devices please wait...
Primary Master: IDE DVD-ROM 16X
Primary Slave: TOSHIBA CD/DVDW
Secondary Master: No Device
Secondary Slave: No Device
Actually, I had a new graphics card installed about four months ago and
that's when I noticed that my two hard drives did not appear as
Master-Slave
on the same channel any more but I don't know if this is the problem
since
the cd-rom drives are detected later on. Do you think I should change
the
way
my hard drives and cd-rom drives are connected?
