Did you try printing plain text from Notepad, or from a Command prompt?
The printer driver has a black only setting, you can try that too. Your
printer is similar in age and driver to my 882c so there's no reason other
than a defect/driver issue for it not to print from the black cartridge.
Unless the software you are using were designating a shade other than true
Black (0,0,0). The HP printer forums would be the place to inquire about
this problem.

P-IV and Celeron, home networked, with a HP CSe895 printer on the
Celeron, but also serving the P-IV, etc. I have always been
disappointed with the "Black" color really being a very Dark Gray and
finally turning a Dark Blue when my color cartridge ran out of Yellow,
telling me that it wasn't using the Black cartridge when appropriate;
eg - when printing black text from Word , or black graphics from
Visual Basic and other programs. I have tried every conceivable
"tweak" from within the printer properties as well as the printing
programs but NG. How can I get the printer to use the Black cartridge
when Real Black [RGB = (0, 0, 0)] is being called for?!
