hi there

I posted a similar problem months ago with no solution, I will try to
describe the problem again...

We run a domain with about 400 PC's

The problem is this...

If I leave a computer on for a while without doing anything, the cd-rom
seems to fall asleep of sorts. I will put a disc in and double click on
the optical drive in my computer and the disc opens up as empty. The disc
is definately not empty (it is a driver disc for a Dell PC) yet shows up
as empty and windows wants me to write data to it (treating it like
writeable Media)

All cables are plugged in correctly etc, all drivers up to date (it is a
fresh install with all updates relevant to the computer)

This is very frustrating as I have staff who really don't like this
problem and I have been unable to track down a cause and thus a cure.

any suggestions would be greatly appreciated :)

I posted a similar problem a few days ago and was advised it could be a
Windows Installer problem. They provided a link to MS site to download and
run the Windows Uninstaller (?) or Installer fix. It seems to have worked
although I had to reinstall a program that was presenting the problem so no
big deal to get rid of such a long time annoyance.

My Front Page (occurs with other apps, users, etc.) wanted me to insert a CD
when I wanted to perform simple tasks and it was already installed
suppossedly fine. I'm just taking a hunch that your problem could be
similar. It's worth trying You might find it somewhere on MS site or one of
posts within the past week. I posted in 24hoursupport.helpdesk I believe. I
didn't read what MS had to say I just downloaded and ran it and the problem
is gone.
