Everest will report the actual manufacture, serial number
and all other details of the RAM installed.
The speed rating of RAM is the speed at which it was tested
to be free from errors. The mobo clock sets the actual
speed the RAM will try to run. If the RAM is rated PC 2100,
and PC 2700 and a third is PC 3200 and the mobo is running
at 400 FSB, the RAM should all function, but if the FSB is
running at higher speeds the RAM with the lower rating will
fail first.
Modern mobo usually use software in the BIOS rather than
jumpers.
I tested Everest from a link in another thread. I don't know if there is
more than one version of it for download, but it appears it does report RAM
speed. David did not.
I didn't think you could mix RAM in the same machine (ie PC 2700 with PC
3200) but I've never bothered to try it myself for fear of ruining hardware.
I recently set the FSB speed on my home computer, and now that you mention
it, I think it was in the BIOS. I just remember it used to be jumpers.
I will find out soon how well RAM chips work with different sizes, since
they've ordered 256MB chips here for PCs with currently 128 MB total.
