Do you have a spare cd drive to see if that is the problem. There are ways to
keep performance up with out having to format. Clearing caches, history temp
file folders.
For the WD HD the program is called Data Lifeguard Tools. Here is the link.
http://support.wdc.com/download/index.asp?swid=1. I hope this helps.

why is it not a good idea to do it once a year? the only reason i do that isb.
ecause after that time it starts to get a bit slower and such, even with
regular virus and spyware scans as well as defragmenting.

I wouldn't think a virus could withstand a format, I suggest it's your cd
drive going bad and or bad media, you shouldn't have to format and reinstall
once a year, that's not a good idea.

I know one of them is WD, so i will look for that, i did a full format its
something im used to doing every 12 months or so so i definatley know cd
drive was set as first boot device, the error was coming when it was copying
the files for the setup.
I will check all the power connections again, i have tried cleaning itb ut
its a difficult job, buit ive just ordered some canned air which i think will
make it much easier. I will try the utilities thing also, but as it is at the
moment i cant get into my computer at all, so ive had to order a new HD so i
can install windows and get to anything.
Thanks for the help, i really appriciate it.

If you know the manufacturer of your HD's then try their web site for system
utilities.
When you formated did you do the quick or full format? I know WD HD's have
utilities that will allow you to zero out your drive to a new status. I would
also double check that the cd-rom is set as the first boot device in the bios
setup. The drive may need cleaning and double check power and cable
conections. If you find utilities and zero out the HD then a quick format
should be just fine. I hope you get it fixed.

Ok this is my problem;
Last week my computer started to restart by itself, i could not figure out
what it was, so i figured it was a virus, instead of going through the hassle
of finding it which im not talented enough to do (norton and AVG didnt pick
up anything), i reformated each hard drive in turn, saving my important files
on the spare drive while i was reformatting the other.
Then when i got back to a fresh version of windows, first my ATI driver cd
had trouble installing, then norton although appearing to install properly,
wouldent update properly and said i should remove it and install only to get
the same trouble again, as well as windows updated getting errors.
So i reformatted again, except now it wont install windows either, i tried
swapping the dvd drive which then tells me when i try to reformat that there
is something wrong with the drive.
So i kind of figured i have one of 2 scenarios, i either have a rather nasty
virus, or that my dvd/cd drive was dieing, which maybe caused hardware
conflicts which caused the rebooting, with all the rebooting this also
corrupted my hard drive, this scenario would also explain why things wouldent
install properly, but im not sure if that is a possible theory or not.
Is it possible it could be that? if not does anyone have any ideas to what
has happened or be able to help me?
