I am searching a good motherboard for an Intel Core Duo CPU.
All the articles I read so far discuss the "Core Duo" as CPU for
notebooks.
Aren't there any mainboards for Core Duo for desktop computers ?

Can someone give me a recommendation for such a desktop Core Duo
mainboard ?

BTW: What is the difference between

"Core Duo" and "Core 2 Duo" ?
There are multiple versions of 'Core Duo' processors. The old 'Core Duo'
processor, was not a terribly 'good' processor. It didn't give that good
performance, but ran cool. It is the new 'Core2 Duo', that has leapfrogged
AMD's offerings, and is a really good processor. The first versions of the
Core2 Duo launched, were the laptop chips, so they are more common than
the desktop variants (been around for about six months more).
For a motherboard, look at:
Gigabyte GA965P-DQ6
Abit AB9
MSI P4M890M
Asus P5W DH or P5WDG2-WS
All of these support the Core2 Duo, and the last in particular, makes a
cracking machine. It is though about the most expensive of the boards.
Asus alone at present offer 5 Core2 duo motherboards, and most
manufacturers offer at least two (choice of chipsets). The basic P5B, is a
cheaper alternative, which is not quite the 'flagship' of the DG2, but
still a good board.
Look at the P5NSLI (which uses the relatively new Nvidea P590 Intel
version chipset), for possibly the best price/performance at present.
If you want to run the Core Duo (as opposed to the Core2 duo) boards like
the Aopen i975Xa-YDG, work well.
The 'Core duo', uses a smaller (479 pin) socket than the Core2 duo (775
pin).

Best Wishes
