There are also USB modems so you don't have to open the case. Did the system come with a monitor? That may have speakers built into it.

There is a huge choice of speakers available these days. .the manufacturer is merely giving you the choice to get your own while saving $5.. :-)

It looks as if it may be an option that you may not have dependant upon the
specific model in the range maybe.. I suggest that you determine how the
computer will be connected to the internet.. if a high speed connection is
to be used, you would not need a 56k modem, although they are still useful
as many ISPs delivering high speed broadband also give the option of a back
up dialup connection..
