I bought the hardware OEM so it came with no driver disc.

I think its time for a new drive, shame I like the LG not used too much,
still should be under warrenty.

It certainly sounds like you're dealing with a defective optical drive. If
the device was working fine one day and suddenly it wasn't recognized by
the
OS (as you've indicated), a firmware upgrade would not "fix" that problem.
And no auxiliary drivers are necessary to implement its function.

The fact that the OS won't boot while the optical drive is connected is
not
unusual. This will frequently be the case when the device is defective.
One
definitive way to determine if the unit is indeed defective would be to
install it in another PC. You might also want to try (if you haven't done
so
already) connecting it as a Slave on the Primary IDE channel.

You mention the device should be under warranty. If it is I would get in
touch in LG A/S/A/P for a RMA.

The drive was purchased as OEM, therefore LG would not honour the
warranty.
The drive must b e returned to the place it was purchased!

Wherever did you get the idea that because the device has been purchased as
an OEM item the manufacturer's warranty will not apply? It most certainly
does apply, at least here in the U.S.. (I assume you live abroad?)

Well I got my new drive today, opted for an LG again, connected up to IDE
secondry master and guess what windows cannot find driver again !!! Connected
to IDE Primary slave and still the same happens.

Device manager is showing device, looks like i may have deleted something by
mistake using a reg cleaner program or something. You would have thought
though that XP would have the driver on the installation cd!!??
