Let me point you back to your own words, where you "clearly" stated in #2:

And since I clearly see no mention of which connection/install method you I leave you with this.
The correct USB drive installation process is as follows:
1.. DO NOT CONNECT THE DRIVE
2.. Install the software, PC or MAC
3.. Power down the system and connect the drive, if there is a hub DO NOT use it at this time
4.. Power on the drive FIRST
5.. Upon system power up, the system will detect the drive and install the drivers.
If the system displays the drive as an Unknown Device in Device Manager, double-click on it, and select Install Driver. This should install the drivers, and the drive will appear under CD-Rom. If you recieve the message that "Windows is already using the best driver for this device," simply highlight and remove the Unknown Device. Reboot the system and/or turn the drive off and on to refresh.
