I cannot install any new USB devices on my PC
I am trying to install a D-link DUB-H4 USB 4-port controller on a Compaq
laptop with Windows XP SP2. When I plug in the controller, it recognizes it
and tries to install the driver (Windows "Generic USB Hub") and fails with
the following message:
"Cannot install this hardware
devices were installed long ago (well before I started having problems
installing any NEW devices).
I've also had problems recently installing all other new USB devices on this
same laptop, e.g. memory card readers, USB hard drives, etc.
PC configuration is: Compaq Presario R4000 laptop with Windows XP Pro SP2
I have a HP pavilion 5185 same problem Logitech Headphones USB 350 work
fine on new HP laptop but no more devices may be installed. Even when
the install is pointed directly at the correct inf file!
Additionally network connections take 17 minuites to be "available" and
IP6 cannot be reinstalled.
We are running into some XP internal limitation. Naturally the first
USB device that stopped working was *any* USB iPod connect. (Firewire
works fine) Including 4th Gen, Shuffle, Nano and the last two do not
have a firewire connect. Apple knows nothing (natch). The ipods do
present as USB mass storage devices. So far all USB mass storage are
ok.
I see issues with many of these complaints going back to SP2 install
Aug 2004. I have not seen such a constellation of issues however.
And if I try to *repair* (install in place) booting becomes corrupt
which makes it a good thing I back up before I tried it.
So this is the constellation of issues which seem to revolve around a
registry that is overloaded and perhaps missing a few pieces.
Cheers John
