Still a little lost with what you did there. I'll try and see if I can get it
to work.
Thanks again

It definately works......
I am over the moon....
All my brainstrain is over....
I didn't use msdos, i used windows & my mouse... (no typing, :D) just copied
the 3 files over to a new folder on desktop...
renamed & removed that line in the text tile with note... then carried on
with installing the LOST Plug and Play Software Enumerator....
To get to C:\windows\inf just type it in your browser as windows hides the
INF folder....

Let me know if this works. I'm a MSDOS dummy so I don't want to try if it
dosen't work. Would reinstalling XP fix the problem? May be simpler to
just
install a sound card.
Thanks

I found the following solution, whether it cures it is anyones
guess...... I
will try it later....
"These are instructions on how to install the Plug and Play Software
Enumerator in XP/2k -- if it is missing. If it isn't missing and works
then
this wouldn't be the cause of your audio problem.
I presume swenum.inf is a Win9X/ME only file. The machine.inf solution
should work for 2000 and XP. If you can't find or see the files it may
be
because your explorer isn't configured to show system or hidden
files --
check your options or use a cmd prompt.
From an MSDOS cmd prompt type or cut and paste:
md \temp
cd \temp
copy %windir%\inf\machine.inf \temp\allmachine.inf
copy %windir%\system32\drivers\swenum.sys \temp
copy %windir%\system32\streamci.dll \temp
notepad \temp\allmachine.inf
Using notepad go to line 20 (CTRL-G 20) which should be
ExcludeFromSelect=*
Delete and remove that line and save the file. Notepad and the cmd
prompt
can be closed.
%windir% was probably c:\windows\ and that was automatically be
expanded in
the windows cmd prompt.
Now, just go to Add Hardware, add a new hardware device there at the
bottom,
install from list, next, have disk, and select the temp directory where
we
copied the files (c:\temp\ in the example here).
You should have all the different machine level services listed since
we've
removed the ExcludeFromSelect=* which hid them all. We only want to add
Plug
and Play Software Enumerator and nothing else so select and install
only
that."

I have exactly the same problem.... identical... I have tried asking
on
here times over the last few weeks, but nobody seems to have a clue
how to
rectify the prob...
I have tried installing many versions of the driver....
installed/uninstalled, still no change.... done it all... got
extremely
bored trying different ideas.... even showing the hidden non-running
devices just in case...
I think its got something to do with one of windows updates.... A
couple
of months back, I let MS update install the AC97 driver update.... my
sound disappeared, I rolled back the driver, all came back and had
been
fine since, until a few weeks back, my sound simply disappeared, the
driver wouldn't start.... even my original driver installs fine but
refuses to start, Xp states to device is fine....
I have completely run out of ideas.... How on earth can the device be
fine, the driver be enabled, but it wont start....
I might pick out a spare drive & install a fresh copy of XP & the
sound
driver on it just to prove a point....

I recently lost my sound.I have a SiS 7012 audio driver . I went into
device
manager and into properties for audio driver and the status says :
driver
is
enabled but has not been started. Else where it tells me that the
device
is
working properly. When I go into sounds and audio devices from the
control
panel , it tells me that I have no audio device. And that my default
device
is modem#0 line playback, there is no other choice in the drop down
box.
I
have uninstalled and reinstalled the device. Now I'm just as lost as
my
sound,is there a way to "start" the driver?
Please help
thanks
