Re: HELP WITH DVD CD Writer

Thanks Jim. The problems I am experiencing with writing to the disk are with
new, never used blank CD-R's as well as new never used blank DVDs.

There are CD-R and then there are also CD-RW media. You can
write to a CD-R only once on any part of the disk. You may
be able to finalize the CD when you write the disk. This
closes the disk down and it is locked and no longer able to
be written. CD-RW media can be re-written, if the software
you are using and the settings you have used have not been
finalized.

|I have seen several mesages on this topic, but none quite
like mine. I have
| an HP desktop with an HP 640b writer. Writer has started
working sometmes
| and not others for the same task. For example, copying
photos to a CD may go
| fine on the first copy and be met with a "there is no
blank CD in the drive"
| message for the second copy. Also, the blank CD may spin
forever when first
| inserted in nthe drive. The only way to stop it is to
eject. It does not do
| this every time. I am running XP Media 2005 and have
various programs for
| different burning purposes. Sonic was preinstalled (along
with some other
| weak programs). I have added Photoshop for pictures/video
an Musicmatch for
| music. Also have iPOD software installed which I have not
used yet. Simple
| copy/paste or drag and drop for a photo file for instance
has the same
| intermittant success - works sometimes, "no blank disk in
the drive" other
| times. I have run the troubleshooter which indicates the
drive is working
| properly.
|
| Any suggestions on software conflicts or hardware issues
that could be
| causing this and the fix would be greatly appreciated. I
don't think the
| drive has gone bad.
