No, firmware and BIOS setting will not be changed during the actual
install. Optical drive firmware will never be changed by Windows, your
BIOS settings may be (uncommon) slightly modified.

I think I understand that firmware updates for an optical drive are stored
in the device's ROM.

If you have to reinstall XP at any time, will the firmware update be
lost? In other words, is there any connection between the Windows OS and
the ROM inside the device?
I need to know if things like firmware and BIOS updates on a reinstall of
XP will be kept or will the reinstall wipe out the BIOS and firmware
updates?
