USB hardware won't install

Bottom line, I have tried to install three different USB devices and
none of them will install. I have four other USB devices (mouse, 2X
external HD and a Smart Card reader) working fine. I also have a USB to
serial cable installed. WinXP is up to date (even installed the !@#$
Windows Validation software so I could see if I needed any other
patches). System is a Compaq SR1630NX with an AMD Athlon.
Started with a HP All-In-One, and as the old printer had worked (and in
fact it printed the test page the All-In-One wouldn't) I took it back
as after dealing with the HP support I was done with it . Tried a
LexMark printer. Same issue, install routine abrubtly stops after the
prompt to plug in the printer. Same issue with a new WebCam (XP sees
the new hadware and the Windows install routine starts). System will
recognize my camera memory card and thumbdrive.
I have tried a new USB cable direct in to the PC and the webcam direct
to the PC. I accidently downloaded and did a partial install of the 64
bit driver for the HP All-In-One till I realized what I had done and
aborted the load. A couple of times while applying Compaq patches I
have gotten a message
c:\Windows\System32\Autoexesc.NT. System is not sutable for running
MS-DOS & MS Windows applications so I don't know if I compounded my
orginal problem beyond repair.
I have checked the system setting, and there are 15 USB enteries,

Standard enhanced PCI to USB Host Controller.

USB Composit Device
3X USB Mass Storage
3X USB Root Hub
