PS/2 keyboard & mouse no longer work

There is a topic with the same issue as me:
http://groups.google.com/group/microsoft.public.windowsxp.hardware/browse_thread/thread/161926b159a13740/6e4664e45a38fda6?lnk=st&q=keyboard+mouse+ps2+%22don't+work%22&rnum=1#6e4664e45a38fda6

After pluging my USB cable (for digital camera) as usual, there were
some pc speaker beeps (like at boot time) then the computer froze.
Upon reboot, there was a series of briek beeps, and neither keyboard
nor mouse worked, even during POST (meaning I can't access the BIOS).
However, windows boots normally.
I've plugged keyboard and mouse in my laptop (usb only) and they work
perfectly.

Keyboard & mouse are USB plugged in the PS/2 ports with adapters. I've
tried plugging them directly in the usb ports under windows, but it
says intallation has failed, and won't work.

I've tried to plug keyboard and mouse separately at boot time, no
success. Inverted plugs (keybord in mouse PS/2 and vice-versa).
However, when the keyboard isn't plugged, I don't hear the
"pathological" beeps, only the normal successful POST beep.

I haven't tried other keyboards or mice as I don't have any under hand.

I will try native PS/2 keyboard and mouse, as well as a serial mouse.

My guess is that somehow the PS/2 ports have a problem on the mobo. Are
there (bootable?) PCI PS/2 cards ?

Thanks for any help (I don't feel like buying a new mobo/CPU/RAM) !

PS: I don't think the hardware details are relevant in that case.
(no my computer actually so I don't have a great deal of detail...
anyways: Athlon @ 1300 MHz, 256 MB SDRAM @ 133, VIA chipset.
