Re: Dell GX270 Hyperthreading and windows xp

Tech-Archive recommends: Repair Windows Errors & Optimize Windows Performance

I just found out that they had replaced these because the originals were
faulty.. and of course the replacements appear to be faulty as well...
fantastic! The original motherboard supported HT.. The replacements have the
option in the bios but they are obviously defective also.

I believe I have a faulty motherboard but no hardware diagnostic points to
any problems.
The issue is:
Enabling hyperthreading on the bios for gx270 is resulting in rapid
crashing
and freezes. The processor is P4, (hyperthreading obviously!).
The bios seems happy enough.. so you can actually image a computer or run
diagnostics.. 16 bit 32 bit everything works.. but windows hangs or
crashes depending on the wind direction.. any ideas?
Bios already flashed to latest version and the chipset is up to date as
well.
The OS is Windows XP Pro SP2 all up to date.
Thank you for your efforts in advance!

Thank you John.. no solution but I seem to have something...
HT crashes windows even if it's a fresh installation from the microsoft CD
Diable HT in bios and no more problems... of course xp sees 1 processor
only
and your are out of luck with HT.
I'll post there to see if anyone can confirm or correct me!

Yes, it seems to me that Windows 2000 can use HT but... it doesn't do
the best job of it, XP is better suited for these processors.

Did you find a solution to your problem? You might want to ask in one
of the XP newsgroups, you might get better results there.

I'm using Windows XP professional but... with regards to win2k pro:

You appear to be correct! There is no documentation that says no way
to
win2k pro or server working with HT. I was looking into something else
and
found a document that refers to HT in use with 2k pro and 2k
server/server
advanced, and there is no mention that it's a problem.

Are you sure about that? I think that while Windows 2000 does not
properly identify HT processors it will nonetheless properly utilize 2
logical processors, it will treat them as individual physical
processors.

Since you didn't mention what operating system you are using, I'll
state the
obvious that Windows 2000 doesn't support hyperthreading.
