The /3GB switch has no effect on this (it directs Windows to allocate 3GB of the virtual
address space to applications and 1GB to the system). The problem is that you have PCIe
cards. They map real memory during the POST startup making it unavailable to the OS. You
can't fix it without going to 64bit OS as Loren says.

I think that's all you're going to get.

You always lose some space to various system functions. Your pair of
512mb cards is burning up 1gb of address space. I would have expected
more like 2.7 or 2.8 from your config but 2.5 doesn't exactly shock
me.

Please ignore the information provided by Loren, as it is 100% completely
wrong.

The motherboard will accept and acknowledge 4GB, the RAM modules must be
installed as matched pairs; If done correctly, BIOS will see the full 4GB;
Windows will may require the /3GB switch in boot.ini to properly access all
of the RAM.

IF you installed four 1GB memory modules, the system may detect less
than 3GB of total memory because of address space allocation for other

recommend that you install less than 3GB of total memory.

BIOS will detect proper amount. With the /3GB switch applied, system will
reallocate RAM to recognize 3GB. The manual is somewhat misleading.
The OP needs to modify his boot.ini; the reason he is not seeing above 2.5 GB
is the way that Windows addresses RAM without the /3GB switch. It has nothing

to do with processes allocating RAM.
