The usual advice is:
Uninstall all win2k USB device drivers
Uninstall the USB port drivers.

Obtain WinXP (Updated) drivers for everything that has them available. Check
the Mfrs websites for driver updates.

Reinstall the USB Port drivers (This may happen automatically when you
reboot, and may be a multilevel operation. (One set of USB drivers loads,
then a second set on a reboot, or after the first set loads.) (USB
controllers and then ports)

If your motherboard uses supplementary chipset drivers, and/or has a BIOS
update available that pertains to the USB ports, Obtain and update before
you do anything else.

Reinstall the device drivers. Usually, a printer driver should be installed
first. Then a scanner, followed by the camera link, then the web cam.

A problem is that some of the drivers may interact. If so then the install
order may need to be changed. (This is usually due to sloppy or outdated
driver code.)

It is also possible that the power loading on the USB ports is high. If so,
a powered USB hub may solve the problem.

Since switching from W2K to XP a few weeks ago, some of my USB equipment
i.e., scanner, web cam, camera link and USB memory stick are no longer
recognized (well, they were not, then they were, now they're not again.).
I've checked all my other USB peripherals, eliminated then one-by-one from
the system, reinstalled software, had my PC checked to the tune of $500...
The ports seem ok, as I can plug a known-working device like a mouse into
any of 5 ports without a hitch.
This is really hard to nail down, and driving me bankrupt besides. Any
ideas?
