For all USB devices: if the device requires a driver that XP does not
have, the driver *must* be installed correctly before that USB device is
connected to the computer the first time.
To fix this failed installation, connect the device, open Device
Manager, find that new device and uninstall it; then disconnect the
device. Reboot. Install the driver and when the installer asks that
the device be connected or the installer finishes, only then connect the
USB device the first time.
