hey....saw the post while looking for some answers of my own! I didn't
see anyone mention the difference in PPPoE and DHCP protocols. This
changes how the modem will be configured prior to the router addition.
If I missed it, I appologize. Fortunately, DHCP will autoconfigure the
modem to bridge mode, thus making it quite easy to add the Linksys!
Although, with a PPPoE DSL connection, you must access the modem
firmware and configure it manually to Bridge. PPPoE will soon become
the main protocol throughout, but there are still many DHCP, DSL and
Cable providers. It is a security thing, where DHCP doesn't actually
require Authentication, where as PPPoE does require a User Name and
Password to Authenticate. Usually, the Authenticating is stored in the
Modem or Router, unless the Modem is "DUMB" (only modulates and
demodulates), where then, a Dialer is required to Authenticate! WinXP
has a built in Dialer, but earlier versions need a 3rd Party Dialer
such as WinPoet (suggest a smart modem to this scenario)
Just felt like typing I suppose! Now my question?? I'm not very
familiar with configuring Wireless Adapters within Windows. If the
modem / router is configured for Wireless.....and the Laptop's Adapter
won't recognise the Wireless signal! Where do you fix this, short of
reinstalling the drivers for the Adapter?? Any help is appreciated!!
