You still didn't answer my question about the virus/malware status of
the machine. Make sure it is clean:

If the machine is clean, try the System File Checker:
Start>Run>sfc /scannow [enter]
Note that there is a space between "sfc" and "/scannow". You may need
your XP cd so have it handy.
