Another network cable unplugged thread, tried everything

Yesterday morning, after powering up my toshiba laptop (portege
4010--win xp pro sp2), I noticed that a balloon had popped up on the
taskbar stating that my ethernet cable had been disconnected. I checked
the physical connections and they seemed fine. I did notice that the
ethernet light on my laptop wasn't on. I took the cable and plugged it
into my GF's laptop (same exact model) and it worked right away (same
cable). All the other computers on my network (xp and linux) work fine.
The NIC is integrated and not a miniPCI, therefore replacing it isn't an
option. There are no device conflicts in device manager. The adapter is
an Intel 8255x-based PCI Ethernet Adapter (10/100).

Heres what i've tried so far:

Starting with the obvious:
*Cleaned port with q-tip and alchohol.
*Switched out cable----twice, Cable is NOT a crossover to router.
*Switched router ports (router is a Dlink di604 and the port my laptop
is plugged into blinks on and off, the config util shows it connect
then disconnected in a 2 second pattern)
*I purchased new crossover cable and tried pc to pc (other pc connects
and disconnects same pattern as router)
*Connected directly to dsl modem, bypassing router (didn't work)
*I recently upgraded my harddrive (about 2 weeks ago) and ghosted from
the old one so I swapped in the old hd that used to work, but nada.
*The other computers on network work fine with the same cable, one is
the EXACT same laptop model and config.
*I have tried the "repair" utility but it says it cannot repair the
connection because it is unable to refresh my IP address

Other stuff i tried:
*Disabling power saving on ethernet controller via device manager as an
xp advisory states
*Tried to disable the network connection but the option is grayed out
*Disabled ICS/firewall,
*Removed device from device manager and reinstalled with latest drivers
and restarted, it reinstalled but same problem
*Disabled lan in bios, rebooted and then reenabled and rebooted
*Switched link speed (went through every combo), on 10mbs the eth.
light is solid and the router see's the connection, but no
connectivity, on 100 no light, no connection to router, no
connectivity
*Finally, I unplugged everything (all powercables, battery, etc as well
as router, other computers and dsl modem) overnight and restarted.
Nothing!
* Also, I tried to assign a static ip through xp and my router

I can connect to the internet through dialup. My atheros 5004+ wireless
miniPCI also connects with no problem to wireless networks.

A part of me suspects that because the the router see's my computer
when it is set for 10mpbs as opposed to 100 there may be an issue with
the pins in the ethernet port on my computer. I did not see any obvious
defects and cleaned the connectors. I made no changes to my config
recently to cause a problem.

If it helps anyone, heres the specs on my machine:
toshiba portege 4010
p3-m 933mhz
512ram
80gig HD
win xp pro/ sp2 (all latest updates)
avg antivirus (no virus found)
