IDE drive connected thru USB not recognized

I'm running Windows XP and I'm trying to connect a MAXTOR 52049u4 drive
using an IDE to USB adapter called "R-DRIVER II" to the USB port of my
machine. At first it worked. I then tried to connect another drive in
the same manner and used one of the jumpers from the MAXTOR disk to set
that drive to master. The second drive didn't work. Reconnecting the
first drive I forgot to put back the jumper and ofcourse it didn't
work. Now it won't work even if I set the jumpers correctly as master.
I may not have "securely disconnected the drive" as proscribed by
windows. When rightcliking the USB icon in the system tray I get a menu
called something like "secure removal of hardware" (My XP installation
is non-english) where the drive is recognized as a USB mass storage
device but with garbage characters in it's name. It doesn't appear in
Explorer, System or Disk Management. Initially I'm told that a driver
is missing for the device but when I try to update the driver none is
found and afterwards I'm told that it works correctly but it doesn't. I
tried to run "diskmgmt.msc" but it hangs trying to connect to "Logical
Disk Manager".
What should I do?
Regards,
George
