Since nobody has provided a specific reply, mine will have to do.
There are too many possibilities here, unless we know how much you
and/or your friend know and have checked out.
For example, were the volume controls checked, both Wave and the Master
Volume? Ar eyou sure MUTE is not checked anywhere? Were all the Control
Panel Audio settings verified? Is there a separate, external
mechanical (i.e. one that you turn with your hand) volume control on
the laptop that may have inadvertantly been turned all the way down
(don't laugh, I've seen this happen)? Did you try to see if there is
any sound when you use headphones, as opposed to the laptop's speakers?
