Sandman scribbled:
Not sure from reading, exactly what you are complaining about(?) IF
it is only the ftdisk error message in System Event Viewer, I get
this everytime I shutdown my USB 2.0 drive also, but it is benign and
never causes any problem; i consider it 'generic' and i have never
lost any data nor has any of it been corrupted. I have had an
external USb drive on my machine for well over 2 years

I never had that message prior to re-installing XP 2 weeks ago. When I first got the external drive I installed the NEC USB 2.0 card and it's drivers in the computer, plugged in the external drive, partitioned and formated it and started using it...

However along with the hotfixes Microsoft sent me and re-installing the NEC USB 2.0 card's drivers the problem has been fixed.

As to ignoring such messages in event logs, how will you know when such messages are pointing to [real] problems if you just ignore them? BTW this message IS a real problem, it means that because XP cant write to the external drive when shutting down, the data/file is being corrupted. I'm picking it's system restore files for the partitions/drive that's getting corrupted, which means system restore will (most likely) fail when you need to use it....
