USB Problems

I have XP PRO SP2 U/Dated. Whenever I connect my Sony USB I can see that it
is connected but it does not show in the My Computers removable devices. The
same thing happened earlier when I connected a flash USB. I need to extract
the photos from the camera and I don't know of any other way. Any ideas?
