Re: Pentium II 350MHz upgrade

I have P2 350MHz in a Slot 1 on a Asus DB98XV 1.01, running WindowsXP Home with all updates. Have had no problems with this system and running many programs, but would like to speed up the CPU. Have a chance to get some PII & PIII's running from 400MHz to 866MHz all Slot 1. My question is will these CPU's interchange without any other changes? Also the present motherboard has a Slot 1 (SE242 connector) for the CPU and I notice that most Pentium's in this speed range state they are a SECC2 Package, is this the same package I presently have as I can not find any package specs. on mine?
Any help would be appreciated,

Your motherboard is an OEM-only model, manufactured for HP by Asus. As such, there is precious little information available regarding supported CPU upgrades. Any Slot1 or Socket370 processor will physically fit on your board (S370 will require a slot adapter), but whether it will work depends on:

1. BIOS support for newer processors - may not be available (but BIOSes can be patched).
2. Voltage regulator chip - may not support lower voltages required by newer processors.
3. Clock generator chip - may limit you to 100Mhz FSB processors.

Your board uses the Intel 440BX chipset. Asus OEM 440BX boards can usually be upgraded to a 1Ghz P3, and sometimes to a 1.4Ghz Celeron or P3-S. Such upgrades are officially unsupported, but they work well if they work at all.

You may get lucky and receive a response from someone who has successfully upgraded a DB98XV board, but more than likely you will have to go under the hood and find out which chips were used on your board and which configuration settings are available via jumpers or BIOS.

Feel free to email me for assistance with determining the possibilities for your board. I have not worked on a DB98XV before, but I expect it will be similar to other Asus 440BX boards I have analysed and upgraded:
