windows crashs after ive installed my video drivers

i recently purchased an MSI nvidia geforce fx 5900xt 128mb graphics card, and
my drivers are somewhat old and i need new ones to play games properly.

my current drivers are at 6.1.7.7, these work fine, but when i update my
drivers to more up to date ones ( the 71.89 driver and other 7. drivers) i
can no longer use my computer, as soon as i get to the sign in screen, a blue
screen flashes for about a second then my computer restarts. i then have to
access safe mode (wich is a real pain) to roll back my drivers.

why cant i update my drivers properly? i have tried 3rd party drivers
(Omega) which work fine, but dont actually do anything. i need to update my
drivers to support direct x 9.0c

does any one know what the problem is and how i can update?
