I know what you mean. I also like doing things for 'the challenge'. And it's
not costing you anything. On the other hand, the advantages of optical media
are so overwhelming, that it really doesn't pay to fiddle with tapes.
Especially when CD and DVD recorders are so inexpensive. I would find a
computer that will transfer the data from tape to optical media and go from
there.

You could take the tape drive apart to see what makes it go. I like doing
that too. Around my house, anything that stops working is a candidate for
autopsy.
