Details of Printer Driver Installation Problem:
I initially went online to Brother Downloads and upgraded the printer driver with Brother-recommended BROHL144.PPD, which I had used to reinstall the printer on another computer after upgrading to XP. The wizard was not successful, but the Installation disk loaded the software program. However, it was simply not recognized anywhere except in Applications. I uninstalled it, and currently cannot find any remnants on the hard drive.

I searched the XP newsgroups and found a few helpful letters, including references for a generic driver (BHPCL4.INF) and sites (including Brother) with specific instructions for installation. This driver is digitally signed to work with MS Word and is recommended for the Brothers HL1440. I downloaded this generic driver, which I have to install before I install the printer. I have followed every step to the letter, and get part-way through the final step (transferring data from the file to the computer/port) when it is interrupted with the message “Printer driver is not installed. Access is denied.” I have tried every port shown on the wizard, and not a single one worked. I have not been able to find any further help and hope somebody here can tell me what to try next.

I would appreciate any direct help or other useful websites.
