Installing Video Card
Drivers
1) Created a system restore point. (If you can also do full backup of C; just in case.)
2) Unpluged internet connection wire, since later steps should have firewall off.
3) Turn off all programs, even virus scanner and firewall.
4) Removed old drivers via add/remove programs control panel, not via uninstall from within device manager.
a) Rebooted.
b) Upon returning to XP desktop, got new hardware wizard.
c) Cancelled out of new hardware wizard.
5) Turn off all programs, even virus scanner and firewall.
6) Install self-extracting, self-installing drivers by double-clicking on file.
a) Files dumped to a temporary local directory, C:\NVIDIA\..\..
b) Got two new hardware found wizards, and cancelled both.
c) Installation completed and said I needed to reboot.
d) Let it reboot now.
7) Upon this reboot, the icons on the login screen were big and not as well defined, typical VGA mode; ditto for the desktop.
8) Turn off all programs including virus scanner and firewall.
9) Got new hardware wizard once again, and this time accepted it.
a) Choose option to install form a user-specified place on disk
b) Navigated to C:\NVIDIA\win2kxp\71.84.
c) Note, did not need to highlight any files, only this directory.
d) Clicked next and drivers installed.
10) Used new NVIDIA icon in systray to resize resolution back to 1200x1024, refresh rate to 75Hz, and colors to 32bits.
11) PC off, re-connect internet cable.
12) Reboot and verify all OK.
13) Delete C:\NVIDIA\win2kxp\71.84.
