I have an external Maxtor 120 GB drive, with Retrospect software
installed, connected to a USB 2 port and sometimes notice what
you describe. I have found that:
If the drive is in sleep mode when I try to copy to it sometimes
it cannot be detected. If I wake it up first, it works every
time.
If I do a soft re-boot, the drive is not detected.
If I do a hard re-boot, the drive is always detected.
When the drive cannot be detected, turning it off and back on
resolves the problem.
