I learned what little I know of PCs in a completely unsystematic manner,
over the past ten years (twenty, if you include my Macintosh days).
I think the Que series by Scott Mueller looks good. (Maybe too much
information.) The eighth edition of it (from early 1997) is online:

The information is dated, but it'll give you a taste of what the book is
like. It's clearly written.
The current edition is the 16th. It's a bit expensive (list $60 US), but you
can get it for much less than that (Amazon $36).
